PCA 968 Register eNewsletter: November 2011

I saw it!

What looked to be a newly designed 968!!

As I got closer I went over the configuration…

Front mounted high performance 4 cylinder engine, check…

6 speed manual transmission, check…

Long hood, short deck, check, check…

German designed 2 seat cabriolet, check…

4 wheel disc, airbags, ABS, check, check, check….

And I love that bright yellow paint job.

But wait, the car is not as good looking as the 968 and the front hood emblem is different, Take a look:

All kidding aside, you have to admit that the new BMW Z4 sDrive28i sure follows the same 968 “recipe” which only goes to show you what a great design it was. Yes, I would love the xenon headlights, keyless entry, iPod integration, and direct injection but I think I’ll keep the 968!!! They are unique.

It’s November now so “Minty” will be put away for the winter in a few weeks but we sure had a busy year with Hershey, a few local shows, and of course, the awesome Parade event held in Savannah. I hope you also had plenty of opportunities to enjoy your 968 in 2011. I made many great new 968 friends at the events and you’ll do the same when you get out an enjoy that great car of yours. I heard from Dick Petticrew out west that the Escape event was a fantastic success with his Hopi tour being one of the most popular. He reported 8 968s in attendance at the event. As always, if you are thinking about doing an event please let me know and I’ll get the word out to the registry members. I recommend Don’s successful formula of running your event in conjunction with another PCA event. This makes for better attendance with twice as much to see for your attendees.

For this month’s featured 968s I have a couple of interesting candidates for you. In 1992 Porsche offered 10 special metallic paint offerings for a cost of $1,600 each (in 1992 dollars). All of the colors are rare with only a few being produced in each offering. A couple of the colors had production numbers of zero for North American 968s! One of those special colors was code 56 Marine Blue metallic. It is an interesting color. It is a blue-gray, on the darker side. Porsche produced two cabs and one coupe for the North American market. One of the cabs is owned by Arlene who lives near me here in CT so I’ve seen the car. Funny thing, I was contacted by the owner of the second cab which lives on the west coast so both cabs are alive and well. Now, if I only knew where the coupe was??? Both cabs have dark blue tops but Arlene’s cab in photo 1 has the cashmere/black interior with a tiptronic trans and the second car has light gray/classic gray interior with a 6spd.
