Optional Equipment

Factory codes, package codes, port-installed extras, dealer add-ons, and handling codes — everything that can appear on a 968’s Vehicle Information Sticker (VIS) or window sticker. Pricing varies by model year.

  • 7 categories — factory, packages, exclusive, custom interior, port, dealer, handling
  • VIS-verified — codes confirmed on the vehicle ID sticker only
  • Period-correct pricing — Porsche reused codes later, so check the year

Where to Find Codes

Two places on every 968

The Vehicle Information Sticker (VIS) lists factory-installed options in Section 5. Look in:

  • Page 1 of the maintenance manual
  • Driver’s-side rear floor or taillight panel under the carpet

The font can be hard to read — examine carefully.

Factory Installed Options

These are installed at the factory and can be confirmed by the VIS. Help us complete the chart — if you have an option this list is missing, please contact the registry. Original window stickers are great sources of information.

Codes that look like options but are standard features

Some codes on the VIS are standard for NA 968s but were listed because they were optional in other markets. Common examples:

  • C02 US Emissions (standard NA; Canadian cars get C36)
  • 249 Tiptronic — standard on Tiptronic 968s
  • 331 AM/FM cassette — standard, replaced when upgraded radio is ordered
  • 423 Cassette container & coin box — standard, sometimes deleted on 1994.5/1995 coupes
  • 425 Rear wiper — standard, sometimes still listed on 1995 coupes
  • 454 Cruise control — standard NA
  • 650 Sunroof — standard NA coupes (rare delete cars exist)
  • 718 Re-VIN to next model year — see Option 718 page
  • 09991 Indicates factory-installed Exclusive program X-codes are present

Factory Package Options

Some options were grouped together as packages. Package codes appear on sales documents — not on the VIS. The individual option codes that make up the package do appear on the VIS.

Exclusive Program (X-codes)

If your 968 has an X code option, it’s part of the Exclusive program — identified by the master code 09991 on the VIS. The most common is the painted-crest center caps (XD4) — 1,931 of 4,242 NA 968s (46%) had it. The wheel-related XD-codes are below; most other X-codes are leather and rootwood interior dress-up options.

Photo Code Description ’92 Cost ’93–’95 Cost Coupes Cabs Total
No photoXD4Rim cap with Porsche crest (4)$208$2141,0089231,931
XD9 wheels painted body colorXD9Wheels painted body color$1,0796410

For the full list of leather and rootwood X-codes ordered on NA 968s, see the Special Interior Options page.

Category 4

Custom Interior Options (5-digit)

Rare 5-digit codes — not part of the Exclusive program, but factory-installed and visible on the VIS. The most common is the deviated carpet option, with codes specific to each color (e.g., black gets 15801; classic grey gets 13941). Other 5-digit options seen:

  • Deviated carpet color — $65 / $75
  • Seat piping in various colors — $120
  • Porsche crest in seat headrest
  • Supple leather
  • Seat stitching
  • Deviating door panel color
  • Deviated beltline (upper dash color) — $719

Full list of 5-digit codes and photos on the Special Interior Options page. If you have one of these codes on your 968 and we don’t, please contact the register.

Category 5

Port Options

Installed at the port (Charleston, SC) before shipment to the dealer. Reflected on the window sticker as line items with costs — the window sticker itself was generated and affixed at the port.

Floor mats — $125 (most common) Factory phone — $1,995 Painted wheels — rare

Port options are easier to retrofit than factory options. One example seen has painted wheels reflected on the window sticker but no XD9 on the VIS — meaning they were installed at the port, not at the factory.

Category 6

Dealer Options & Modifications

Once a 968 reached the dealer, anything could happen to make a sale. The most extreme example documented: a dealer repainted a brand-new black coupe in Wimbledon Green at the dealership to sell it. (You know how much paint that is on a 968 — and apparently they did a great job.)

Other dealer “shenanigans” were less elaborate but more common:

  • Cabriolets on the showroom floor with their 17″ Cup 2 wheels removed (reflected on a supplemental window sticker)
  • Sport seats taken out of one 968 to put in another, with the original line item “whited out” on the window sticker and the price recalculated

Dealer modifications are “Day 2” changes — not factory in any way. Without the original paperwork, you can’t always tell what was changed where. Always cross-reference window sticker against VIS.
